Our Canine Welfare & Care Standard
At Agility K9 Protection Ltd, our working dogs are far more than security partners. They are valued members of our family, trusted working companions and, above all, our responsibility.
We believe that exceptional canine security begins with exceptional care. Every dog in our team deserves respect, compassion, appropriate training and the highest possible standards of welfare, both on duty and at home.
Our approach is guided by the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs and the relevant requirements of BS 8517-1 for general-purpose security dogs.
1. Safe, Purpose-Designed K9 Transport
Our dogs’ safety and comfort during transport are essential. Our operational vehicles are equipped to provide a secure, well-ventilated and appropriately controlled environment, with their welfare considered throughout every journey.
Temperature Control: Ventilation, auxiliary heating and air conditioning help maintain suitable conditions in changing weather.
Secure Transit Crates: Purpose-designed, lockable transport crates provide secure accommodation, with practical features such as easy-clean flooring and non-slip matting.
Temperature Monitoring: Digital temperature monitoring allows handlers to check conditions within the K9 compartment and respond promptly to any concerns.
Hydration and Comfort: Fresh drinking water is available, with appropriate opportunities for hydration, rest and welfare checks during shifts and breaks.
Our transport arrangements are designed around the individual needs of each dog, with safety and welfare remaining a priority at all times.
2. Family Life and a Comfortable Home
Unlike arrangements that rely on separate outdoor kennelling, every dog in our team lives indoors at home with their designated handler.
Part of the Family: Our dogs enjoy a home environment and develop close bonds with their handlers, supporting familiarity, trust and stability.
Individual Attention: Living together allows handlers to become familiar with each dog's normal behaviour, personality and routines.
Early Recognition of Concerns: Familiarity with each dog helps handlers recognise potential changes in behaviour, appetite or physical condition and seek veterinary advice when needed.
We believe that a secure, loving home environment is an important part of a dog's overall wellbeing.
3. Ethical, Welfare-Led Training
We believe effective security work should never come at the expense of a dog's welfare. Our training approach prioritises clear communication, appropriate rewards and a strong working relationship between dog and handler.
Positive Reinforcement: We use reward-based training, play and encouragement to develop engagement, confidence and reliable responses.
Mental Enrichment: Structured activities and training exercises provide mental stimulation and opportunities to use natural canine abilities.
Trust and Consistency: Our aim is to develop confident, well-managed working dogs through consistent handling, appropriate training and mutual trust.
Our dogs' physical and emotional wellbeing remains central to how we prepare them for operational duties.
4. Veterinary Care, Fitness and Nutrition
Every dog deserves attentive healthcare and a care plan suited to their individual needs. We take a proactive approach to maintaining the health, fitness and wellbeing of our working dogs.
Routine Veterinary Care: Health checks, vaccinations, parasite prevention and other treatments are arranged according to each dog's needs and veterinary advice. Microchipping and relevant health records are maintained as appropriate.
Fitness and Conditioning: Suitable exercise and conditioning help maintain muscle strength, mobility and physical fitness while supporting long-term joint health.
Individual Nutrition: Each dog's diet is selected to suit their age, body condition, activity levels and individual nutritional requirements.
Ongoing Health Monitoring: We monitor changes in condition and behaviour and seek veterinary advice whenever concerns arise.
Our objective is to ensure that every dog is fit for duty, appropriately cared for and given the best opportunity to enjoy a healthy life.
5. Operational Safety and Duty of Care
Our responsibility to our dogs continues throughout every deployment. No operational requirement should take priority over their health, safety and welfare.
Appropriate Working Hours: We manage working periods and provide suitable rest breaks, hydration and recovery time.
Weather Protection: We assess environmental conditions and take appropriate precautions during periods of extreme heat or cold. Duties are adjusted or suspended whenever conditions may compromise a dog's welfare.
Safe Working Practices: Deployments are planned around appropriate control measures, safe working distances and the circumstances of each assignment, protecting the dog, handler and members of the public.
Ongoing Assessment: Handlers remain attentive to signs of fatigue, stress, discomfort or illness and take appropriate action when concerns arise.
A dog's welfare always comes before the demands of a deployment.
6. A Lifetime Commitment: Retirement for Life
Our commitment to our dogs does not end when their working careers come to a close.
Every dog deserves a safe, comfortable and loving retirement.
A Permanent Home: When a dog retires from operational duties, our commitment is to keep them in their familiar home with their handler as a cherished family pet.
Continued Veterinary Care: Retired dogs continue to receive appropriate veterinary attention, suitable nutrition, exercise and any additional care required as they grow older.
Comfort and Companionship: We adapt their routines to suit their changing needs, ensuring they can enjoy a comfortable, secure and fulfilling retirement.
Our dogs give us their trust, loyalty and dedication throughout their working lives. We believe they deserve the same commitment in return, for the rest of their lives.
Our Philosophy
A dog that is loved, respected and properly cared for at home is a valued partner on duty. At Agility K9 Protection Ltd, we believe that looking after our dogs is fundamental to looking after the people and properties entrusted to our protection.
Their welfare is our responsibility. Their loyalty is never taken for granted.
